Self-imposed abstemiousness and a shortage of funds often make January a tough month to fill with activities. Tintype gallery on Essex Road has risen to the rescue with a series of artist-led walks.

Linked to its Essex Road 5 film programme, these free public events are a great way to discover new things in familiar places.

The first walk, starting at 11.30am on Saturday 12 January, involves ‘walking conversations’ between long-term locals and Essex Road 5 artists connecting two experiences of the same place.

At 2.00pm the same day, you can also join a walk between the three Carnegie-funded libraries in Islington – Central Library, West Library, and South Library – with artist Nicole Vinokur, whose film is part of Essex Road 5, and Teresa Grimes, director of Tintype.

Then a week later at 3.00pm on Saturday 19 January, Anna Hart of Air Studio will lead a silent walk from Tintype gallery. Anna Hart has a long-term habit of taking people for a walk, often in silence, to prompt paying attention to the everyday.

Also at 3.00pm on Saturday the 19th, you can join a tour and walk around the environs of the art deco ex-Carlton Cinema on Essex Road with artist Michelle William Gamaker. Michelle shot her film for Essex Road 5 entirely in the building.

For full details of times and meeting places can be found at Tintype.

Please note all events are free but you need to email info@tintypegallery.com to book places.
